Female foeticide shameful for Maharashtra: Sule

"I feel sad that such incidents are coming to light in the birth centenary year of Y B Chavan, the tallest leader of the state and the country," Sule told reporters here.

Mere legislations and action against doctors and sonography centres will not help change the mindset of people, their preference for the male child, she said.

"The state government is doing its best to stop this. But, technology is being used wrongly. In Thailand, gender of the foetus can be known through the blood test of the pregnant woman," the Baramati MP said.

Stressing upon the need for gender equality in society, she said awareness should be created and steps taken in this direction.

"There is no short-term method to change the centuries old perceptions regarding the girl child overnight," she said adding that initiatives like the NCP's Yuvati Congress cell, empowering women, were needed to be taken by the society.
