Film director Ameer was today granted anticipatory bail by a court here in the case related to a fracas that broke out during a debate organised by a
private TV channel in the city early this month.
District Sessions Court In-charge Judge Sanjay Baba allowed the petition filed by Ameer, against whom a case had been registered by the city police under IPC sections 153 (A) (promoting enmity between different groups) and 505 (statements conducing to public mischief).
The judge directed Ameer to appear before a local police station and explain his position.
Besides Ameer, cases had also been registered against the 'Puthiya Thalaimurai' channel, its reporter, who had booked a private college for holding the debate, and MLA U Thaniyarasu.
The channel had organised the 'Round Table debate on people's right to protest,' on June 3, in which leaders of various political parties took part.
Certain remarks by Ameer had led to a few among the audience, including BJP and Hindu Munnani workers, raising objections, leading to brief disruption of the debate.
Thaniyarasu had backed the views of the film director.
