Film director urges centre to encourage short filmmakers

National award-winning film director, producer and actor Bijaya Jena today urged the centre and Doordarshan to include award-winning short films in the national TV channel's programme list as an encouragement to the makers.

"I urge the Government of India and Doordarshan to include the award winning short films to encourage their makers to recover their cost of production and to make more such films in the future", said Jena.

"I have been fighting for this cause with signature campaigns", said Jena who played Laila in Raizia Sultan.

She also said that the first edition of the Guwahati Film Festival, which will begin here tomorrow, will showcase films promoting the country's cultural heritage.
 

"We must keep alive our 5000 year old culture and heritage, and remind ourselves of the past by holding such film festivals. It is a good endeavour and it will grow", the director-actor said.

Announcing the results of the Heritage Short Film Competition, Jena who was the chairperson of the jury said the best film was bagged by "The Pride of Assam," produced and directed by Manab Jyoti Kalita, who also won the best editor award.

The best director award was bagged by Ramen Borah for "Final Amen" which also garnered the best director of photography award for Hiten Thakuria, best sound designing for Amrit Pritam Dutta and best voice over for Jitendra Ramprakash.

"Jadima - A Sacred drink of Dimasa Tribes" by Hemprokash Mout and "Song from Mapao" by Renuka Soraisam received the jury's special mention certificate.

Assamese music director Pabitra Margherita said that patriotic films depicting Indian culture and heritage would be screened in the two-day long festival presented by film society Chalaachitram in association with union Directorate of Film Festivals and Assam Department of Culture.

The feature films to be screened are "Veer Savarkar" directed by Ved Rahi, "Sardar" by Ketan Mehta,"Delhi 6" by Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra, "Lokmanya - Ek Yugpurush" by Om Rout, "A Wednesday" by Neeraj Pandey, "Kukhal" by Jahnu Baruah and "Gandhi" by Richard Attenborough.
