Singer Fiona Apple and filmmaker Paul Thomas Anderson were Hollywood's 'it' couple when they dated in the late 1990s, and after almost two decades the Grammy-winner said the director was coldly critical and contemptuous during their time together.

Speaking to The New Yorker's Emily Nussbaum, Apple relived, what the journalist described as the singer's "painful and chaotic" relationship with Anderson.

The duo first met in 1997 during a Rolling Stone cover shoot and just like Adam Sandler's Barry Egan in his film "Punch-Drunk Love", Anderson followed Apple to Hawaii where they "solidified" their relationship.

"I remember going to meet him at the bar at the Mandarin Oriental Hotel, and he was laughing at me because I was marching around on what he called my 'determined march to nowhere'," Apple told Nussbaum.

The 47-year-old musician, who is currently looking forward to the release of her new album 'Fetch the Bolt Cutters', also recalled "excruciating night" she had with Anderson and his friends, filmmaker Quentin Tarantino, that made her quit cocaine.

"(Apple) had quit cocaine years earlier, after spending 'one excruciating night' at Quentin Tarantino's house, listening to him and Anderson brag. 'Every addict should just get locked in a private movie theatre with QT and PTA. on coke, and they'll never want to do it again,' she joked," Nussbaum writes.

Apple said Anderson always had temper issues and she decided to part ways with the acclaimed director after the 1998 Academy Awards where he threw a chair across a room following the ceremony.

The singer said that was the time she realised "f*** this, this is not a good relationship".

Apple went to her father's house but came back to her and Anderson's home next day.

Nussbaum revealed that at social gatherings, the "There Will Be Blood" director

would murmur harsh words in her ear, telling her that she is a bad partner, while being sweet on the face. Apple believes the behaviour made her look unstable to strangers.

The couple parted ways in early 2000s.

Anderson has not yet responded to the profile.
