The Goa Police filed an FIR against former BJP MLA and veteran writer Vishnu Wagh and a leading publisher today for allegedly using derogatory language in his book "Sudirsukt", written in Konkani language.

The Ponda police filed the FIR against Wagh and the publisher of the book, Hema Naik, following a complaint filed by woman activist Auda Viegas.

Wagh, who had represented the St Andre constituency in the Assembly, has been suffering from various illnesses.

Viegas had filed a complaint on September 4 this year in Margao and Panaji police stations.

The complaint was later forwarded to Ponda police station as the office of the publisher was in its jurisdiction.

"The offence was registered against Wagh and Naik under section 293 (sale of obscene objects to young person) and section 294 (obscene acts and words) of the Indian Penal Code," a senior official from Ponda police station said.

When contacted, Viegas said that she had always admired the writings of Wagh, but felt disgraced after reading the book.

"It does not only portray women in bad taste, but the book also speaks about castes, which is wrong. We have moved on from the caste-based issues," she said.
