Fire at under-construction building: Contractor, 2 others held

The contractor of an under- construction building and two others were arrested today in connection with the fire at the site on Wednesday killing six people, a senior police official said.

Contractor Kiran Patel, site engineer Shiju John and site supervisor Prashant More were arrested this afternoon, he said.

They were booked on the charges of causing death by negligence, causing hurt by act endangering life or personal safety of others and negligent conduct with respect to fire or combustible matter among others, the official said.

The accused were produced in a local court which sent them in 14-day judicial custody, the official said, adding further investigation into the matter was underway.
 

Six people, including a child, were charred to death on Wednesday night in the fire at the under-construction building in suburban Juhu.

The victims were construction workers and staying in the makeshift rooms at the site when the accident occurred.

The blaze led to an explosion in the LPG cylinders kept at the site, causing severe injuries to those present in the building.

Seventeen people were living in the makeshift accommodation in the stilt portion of the structure when the fire broke out.
