Many areas here including the district headquarters town plunged into darkness due to disruption in power supply after a fire broke out in a transformer today.
The fire which erupted following a blast in the transformer soon spread to another adjacent transformer and equipment, officials said.
Power supply to Bhadrak town and many parts of the district was disrupted as the fire broke out when the transformer was being charged, they said.
Fire tenders from the town and other places were pressed into service to douse the flames, officials said.
As the electricity supply was snapped immediately after the incident as a precautionary measure, Bhadrak town and many other areas of the district plunged into darkness. Efforts are on to restore normalcy as early as possible, officials said.
While the incident was believed to have been caused by some technical snag, a senior GRIDCO official said that exact reason can be ascertained only after a thorough inquiry.
Bhadrak district collector Gyana Ranjan Das, SP Anup Sahoo and other senior officials rushed to the spot to take stock of the situation.
