A fire broke out today in the Neo-Natal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) of the government district hospital where 35 young children were being treated.

No child was injured in the mishap as all of them were swiftly rescued, a senior health officer said.

The fire broke out and spread in the NICU. The hospital staff and others swiftly acted and safely brought out the children from there. It is suspected that a short circuit in an air-conditioner caused the fire, Chief Medical and Health Officer (CMHO) Dr G S Rajput said.

According to eyewitnesses, the children were brought out of the NICU by breaking its windows.

The children have been shifted to NICU of Gwalior district hospital, Rajput said, adding that an inquiry has been ordered into the incident.

Meanwhile, fire fighters managed to douse the flames after over an hour.
