Two children have died in an early morning fire that engulfed their family's wooden home in a community just south of Guyana's coastal capital.

Several neighbors in the working-class district of Lodge broke down in tears as firefighters carried away the remains of the children, whose identities and ages were not immediately disclosed by authorities.

Fire Chief Marlon Gentle says investigators believe the blaze was started early today by a candle on the ground floor. Residents used candles to light the home since power service had been disconnected.

Two adults inside the home were being treated for non-life-threatening burns at a hospital in Georgetown, the capital of the South American country.
