Fire in old Baramulla, 16 houses damaged

Over a dozen residential houses were damaged in a major fire incident in Baramulla district of north Kashmir, but no one was injured, officials said today.

Fire broke out in a house at old town Baramulla, 55 kms from here, late last night and within no time spread to adjoining houses in the thickly populated area, a spokesman of the Fire and Emergency Services said.

He said fire tenders were immediately pressed into service and the fire was brought under control after several hours of intense fire fighting operation.

At least 16 residential houses were damaged in the incident, the spokesman said adding the cause of the fire is being ascertained.
 

Meanwhile, the district administration today distributed relief among the fire victims.

"A total of Rs 2.47 lakhs were distributed among the affected people. Besides, 47 tents and 92 blankets were given to the affected families," an official spokesman said.

Moreover, he said free ration of 30 kg and one Kg sugar per family was also distributed on spot among them.

The spokesman said a committee has been constituted to assess the damage and accordingly relief under SDRF norm will be provided to the affected families.
