According to official statistics, there were 127 incidents of fire in government buildings till July 31, this year as against a total of 130 in the whole of 2011.

A Fire Department official said all the high-rise buildings constructed in Delhi have clearance from the Delhi Fire Service after the enforcement of Delhi Building Bye-Laws of 1983.

The issue of fire safety of buildings in the capital has come to fore after a blaze in the Union Home Ministry here on June 24. An inquiry has suggested that the fire occurred due to some persons throwing burning beedis or cigarette stubs into waste bins.

Following the major blaze in Mumbai Secretariat in June, it also emerged that the Delhi Secretariat functioned without the requisite measures in place for around the first four months of this year. The Delhi Secretariat got fire safety clearance in April.

Earlier, it came to light during a survey by the Delhi Fire Service that 2,377 high rises, both private and public, did not have the no-objection certificates from the fire department.
