First downpour in city, traffic goes haywire

The metropolis today received its first heavy downpour this monsoon as several arterial roads were waterlogged, leading to traffic congestions.

The city recorded 66.8 mm rainfall in six hours between 8.30 am and 2.30 pm, which was the highest intensity of rainfall this season here, regional Met director G K Das said.

There is possibility of light to moderate rain in the southern districts of West Bengal, including Kolkata, during the next two days.

The Met department has, however, warned of heavy to very heavy rainfall during the next three days in the north Bengal districts of Darjeeling, Kalimpong, Jalpaiguri, Coochbehar and Alipurduar.
 

Several arterial roads in the state capital was waterlogged as heavy rains affected almost all parts of the city this afternoon.

Traffic congestions were witnessed at many places owing to the water logging, leaving home-bound school children stranded for a long-time before they could reach their destination.
