Fishermen in coastal areas of Tamil Nadu, including Kanyakumari, Pudukottai, and Ramanathapuram, refrained from venturing into the sea due to high velocity winds and choppy sea today.

Rameswaram Fishermen's association President Emirite said two-wheeler riders found it difficult to travel in Rameswaram due to strong winds triggering sand storms.

Fishermen were forced to remain indoors for the fifth day today in Kanyakumari, where some coastal villages were battered by giant waves, he said.

The district was also experiencing heavy rain.

With monsoon rains intensifying, people were not allowed to take bath in Thirparappu falls.

Fishermen said they were not able to spread their fishing nets owing to high velocity winds.

The rains have also caused damage to banana and rubber crops in the district, Horticulture Officer Krishnan said.

People in Chinnaturai, Poothurai and Iraviputhanthurai had migrated to safer hamlets as the ferocious waves battered the coast.

Fishermen in Nagapattinam and Pudukottai also did not venture into the sea for fishing due to strong winds.
