Fishermen observe fast in front of post office

: About 2,000 fishermen from six districts observed a fast in front of the Post office at Nagapattinam, demanding that government take steps to secure release of Indian fishermen arrested by Sri Lankan naval personnel and lodged in jails in that country.

The fishermen were from districts including Nagapattinam, Thanjavur, Pudukottai, Tiruvarur and Ramanathapuram

The fishermen also alleged that there were frequent attacks on them by the naval personnel.

Meanwhile, the fishermen later decided to block the Karaikal Private port, and picket trains, sea and road routes leading to the port, demanding release of 76 boats from Lankan custody and also compensation for 18 vessels that had been damaged.
 

The fishermen had begun an indefinite strike from yesterday to press their demands.
