With the construction work of the fishing harbour at Poompuhar here nearing completion, the state government has come up with a proposal to construct another one at Tarangambadi at an estimated cost of Rs 136 crore.
Tamil Nadu Fisheries Minister D Jayakumar, accompanied by Handlooms Minister OS Manian, and Nagapattinam District Collector S Pazhanisamy, yesterday visited Poompuhar and Tarangambadi to inspect the project related works.
About 75 per cent work of the harbour at Poompuhar, being constructed at a cost of Rs 148 crore, has been completed, fisheries department officials informed.

Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa laid the foundation stone for the project in 2013.
Later, at nearby Tarangambadi, the Ministers inspected the process for identifying the land for building another fishing harbour at a cost of Rs 136 crore.
The new fishing harbour will benefit the fishermen of 14 fishing hamlets around Tarangambadi, officials said.
Joint Director of Fisheries Subburaj, Poompuhar MLA Paunraj and other officials were present.
