The Special Task Force (STF) of Bihar Police arrested five persons on the charge of arms smuggling from two places of Samastipur district and recovered two double barrel guns along with ammunition during the wee hours today.

Inspector General of Police (Operations) Sushil M Khopde said the persons were travelling in SUVs on the road from Munger to Samastipur when the STF teams nabbed them.

"The arrested persons have a history of selling weapons to criminal gangs in the state and STF was on their trail for some time. It got leads about their movement towards Samastipur and intercepted them," Khopde said.

The IG said the arrested persons were interrogated about their motives for visiting Samastipur and who were the people for whom they were carrying the firearms. Their other links with criminals and Maoists are also being traced.

Bihar Police has started a crackdown on criminals in view of the forthcoming Assembly elections which could be held in October - November this year.
