Five new-born babies died at the Medical College and Hospital, Kolkata, in the last 12 hours, sparking protests from parents who alleged that it was a case of medical negligence.

The babies were admitted to the Sick Newborn Care Unit (SNCU), hospital authorities said.

Parents of the babies have alleged that medical interns were left to take care of the unit, as a result of which the deaths occurred.

Denying medical negligence in the case, hospital superintendent Sikha Banerjee told reporters that they would enquire about the reasons behind the deaths since they have got complaints from the parents.
