Five persons, including three women were killed, a minor girl was injured and three others went missing today when the car they were travelling in fell into river Yamuna in Uttarkashi district.

The mishap occurred on Navgaon-Badkot road when the car with nine persons on board was returning from a fair organised on the occasion of Mahashivratri at Navgaon and plunged into the river, Badkot sub-divisional magistrate Parmanand Ram told PTI.

The bodies of three women and two men have been recovered, he said.

A 15-year-old girl, who was injured in the accident, has been rescued and rushed to hospital.

Three persons have gone missing and it seems they were swept far away by the strong currents of the river, Ram said.

However, search for the missing persons was on, he said, adding chances of their survival was thin due to the strong currents, he said.

The deceased have been identified as Bindra Bedi (26), Sushila Devi (25) Rajkumari (30), Jagat Singh and Joginder Rana whose age could not be confirmed, Ram said.

Rescue work was being carried out with the help of locals, he added.
