Five elephants killed in five days in Assam

Two adult elephants were killed and another injured in two separate incidents in Assam's Goalpara and Nagaon districts close on the heels of three others being killed two days ago in Hojai district.

An elephant died and another was injured by a goods train when they were crossing a rail line at Darangiri in Goalpara district yesterday, Forest Department officials said today.

A high level team of the Forest Department with veterinary doctors from the Guwahati zoo tranquilised the injured elephant for medical treatment, the officials said.

After first aid care the injured elephant was sent back to the forest, they said adding a post mortem was conducted on the dead pachyderm and buried at the spot.
 

Today at Kulibagan near Chapanala in Nagaon district, an adult male of a herd of wild elephants from Karbi Anglong hills died while fighting among themselves, forest officials said.

Earlier on December 5, three elephants, including a pregnant one, were killed on the spot when the up Kamrup Express knocked them dead in Hojai district near Jugijan and one of them was pregnant, the sources said.
