Five members of a family were killed in a head-on collision between a car and a truck near Khurampur village on the outskirts of the city on Phagwara- Hoshiarpur road.

Sadar SHO Lakhvir Singh identified the deceased as Reena (35), her two sons Raghav (10) and Manav (7), her brother-in-law Vikas (30) and sister Shikha (28).

Two other family members - 37-year-old Surinder and eight-month-old Shivaka - sustained serious injuries and were referred to a Ludhiana hospital, said the SHO.

They all belonged to Tajpur Road, Ludhiana, he said.

The family was returning after paying obeisance at Mata Chintpurni shrine in Himachal Pradesh, he said.

The site presented a gory scene, with blood stains and pieces of flesh strewn on the road.

The collision was so intense that the car was flung in the air and hit the fuel tank of the truck which then caught fire, he said.

The car was so badly mangled that its make could not be gauged.

Local fire brigade personnel doused the flames, he said.

The truck driver fled from the scene, leaving the vehicle behind.

Sadar police has registered a case under relevant Sections of IPC, including 304-A(causing death by negligence) against the absconding driver, said SHO.
