In a gruesome attack, five labourers from Tamil Nadu were brutally hacked to death by some workers at a farm at Harale village in Chamarajnagar district.

The victims, including two women and a 11-year-old girl and the labour contractor, were killed in the wee hours while they were sleeping in their makeshift tents by some among the workers employed in the field, Chamarajnagar District Superintendent of Police Rangaswamy Naik said.

All the victims died instantaneously, he said, adding, the attackers were armed with sickle and other blunt objects.

The labourers, hailing from Tamil Nadu's Erode district, had been engaged in the sugarcane field for the last two years under the contractor who had employed about 15 to 20 workers, he said.

Chamarajnagar district borders Tamil Nadu.

The reason for the attack was not known but it must be due to some "internal problem" among the labourers, he said, adding, about 10 workers had fled the field after the attack.

Meanwhile, a report from Erode in Tamil Nadu, quoting police, said relatives of the victims have rushed to the government hospital at Kollegal where the bodies have been kept.

Those who were hacked to death were Kasiannan, Sivammal, Rajendran, Rajammal and Roja, the report said.
