Five get rigorous jail terms for drug smuggling

A special court today awarded seven years rigorous jail term to two persons and four years RI to three others in a drug smuggling case.

Special Judge Yogesh Dutt Shukla awarded seven years RI to Mohammad Farooq and Fakruddin Ali (residents of Chennai) and four years RI to Lalijaan, Firdaus (both hailing from Delhi) and Chetan Saxena of Madhya Pradesh. The Judge also imposed a fine of Rs 50,000 on each of them.

The convicts were found guilty of smuggling ephedrine valued worth Rs 7.50 crore in international market last year, the prosecution said.

They were smuggling 25kg of the drug in Kerala Express train and apprehended on a tip-off by the Bhopal Police at Hoshanagabad on December 24, 2014, Special Public Prosecutor, K K Thapak said.
 

The sentences were awarded under Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act, Thapak added.
