Five persons, including a college

student, were arrested here for allegedly robbing Rs 14 lakh from two persons, police said today.

While the victims were returning after collecting weekly payment from local traders last week, the gang allegedly attacked the duo with stumps at Thane's Chintamani chowk and fled from the spot.

Police inspected the CCTV footage installed in the nearby shops and spotted the assailants, senior sub-inspector P Boraste said adding that they recovered two cricket stumps from the spot that were used to hit the victims.

All the five were nabbed yesterday from suburban Mira Road.

Three of the accused knew that the victims used to come to collect money every Monday.

Police had earlier lodged a case against three unidentified accused under section 394 of IPC (voluntarily causing hurt in committing robbery) but after investigations, a case was registered under section 397 of IPC (robbery, or dacoity, with attempt to cause death or grievous hurt).

"One of the accused is a second year B.Com student in Thane," Boraste said.

The accused were produced before a local court yesterday, which remanded them in four-day police custody.

The five accused were identified as Angat Singh Bacchulal Prajapati (29), Raju Chouhan (26), Deepak alias Suraj Fulchand Vishwakarma (23), Manoj Ramlagan Jaiswal (22) and Pankaj Ravindra Rajbhar (21).
