Police today seized Rs 83 lakh in demonetised currency from a car and detained five persons in the city's Camp area.

On a tip-off, police intercepted the vehicle and found the scrapped notes in the denominations of Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 during search, a senior officer said.

Additional Superintendent of Police Harsh Poddar said the junked notes could have been brought in the powerloom town for exchanging them with new currencies for a commission.

He said the Income Tax department was informed about the seizure.
