Five persons have been critically injured in bear attacks in Kashmir, where two black bears were shot dead by the wildlife department in separate incidents in Bandipora district.

A wild bear was shot dead by sharp shooters yesterday after the beast attacked a 45-year-old Habibullah Dar in his fields at Ajas village, 55 kms from here, officials said today.

Dar was critically injured in the incident and was later hospitalised while the carcass of the beast was removed, they said.

Another bear ventured into Aragam village and was shot at by the sharpshooters who have been deployed at various places in the district following frequent attacks by the beasts.

The injured bear fled towards the nearby forests and was later found dead, the officials said.

Four persons were injured when they were attacked by a black bear at Narin Ist Botapathri in the periphery of Gulmarg hill resort last evening, the officials said.

The bear was chased by the villagers deep into the forest and the injured were hospitalised, they said.
