Five persons, including two women, were injured in police firing and baton charge on villagers who were demanding handing over of suspected thieves to them, police said today.

Police had last night detained five-six persons who were suspected to have stolen motors from tubewells in the area over the past few days.

Between Nagla Beech and Barai villages, locals stopped the police vehicle and demanded that the accused be handed over to them so that they could "bring them to justice", police said.

Sub-inspector Vijay Pal tried to pacify the villagers, who, however, started pelting stones and damaged the vehicle, police said.

Later, the villagers gheraoed Awagarh police station and again pelted stones and also allegedly tried to set the police station on fire, forcing the police to resort to baton charging and firing, police said.

Rajesh, Bahadur and Umesh were injured in the firing, while Sheela and Nirmala sustained injuries in the baton charge. All the injured have been admitted to the district hospital, police said.
