Five killed as severe storm lashes Assam

At least five persons have died in severe storm and lightning in different parts of Assam, officials said today.

Three of a family died and four others were injured in a tea garden at Margherita in Assam's Tinsukia district when heavy storm lashed the state last night, a police officer said.

The storm brought down the tin roof of the house crushing three family members to death and seriously injuring four others, the officer said.

The deceased have been identified as Radhika Birsa, Anu Tanti and Maina Tanti.

In neighbouring Dibrugarh district, one person, identified as Narayan Chitua, died when lightning struck his house at Gojpuria area in Moran town, the officer said.
 

In Barak valley's Cachar district, a 70-year-old woman was killed and three of her family seriously injured when a tree uprooted by a severe storm fell on their house in Dudhpatil area after midnight, police said.

The deceased has been identified as Bibhuti Nath and the injured have been admitted to Silchar Medical College Hospital, they said.

Severe storm lashed the state last night damaging houses and uprooting trees and electric poles, leading to disruption of power supply in several places.
