The accused, who were arrested from a hotel in Almora district of Uttarakhand today, have confessed to their involvement in the crime, SP B Satheesh Balan said, adding that with this, the total number of arrests made in the case has gone up to seven.

Thanking Uttarakhand police for its cooperation in nabbing them, Balan said teams have also been sent to other states including Rajasthan to arrest the remaining accused.

Meanwhile, a group of villagers from Dabra village today met district officials and sought release of Sunil alias Gharsi Yadav, the second accused who was arrested on Monday.

They claimed that Sunil was innocent as he was not present in the village when the incident had taken place.

Yesterday, the National Commission for Scheduled Caste had taken strong exception to the delay in the arrest of those involved in the case.

The teenage Dalit girl was allegedly raped by a group of youths who had also threatened to make public her objectionable pictures, following which her shocked father had committed suicide on September 18.
