Five pilgrims returning from Pokhran were killed Wednesday afternoon after their car collided head-on with a truck near Balesar on the Jodhpur-Jaisalmer Highway, police said.

All victims were from Gujarat, and were returning after paying obeisance at the shrine of Baba Ramdeo, SHO (Shergarh) Sawai Singh said.

The truck carrying apples was trying to overtake another vehicle on the highway when it collided with the car coming from the opposite direction, he said.

Four victims died on the spot, Singh said, adding that a fifth one succumbed to injures in a hospital.

"The truck coming from Jodhpur hit the car while it was apparently overtaking another vehicle. The collision was so intense that car got stuck in the truck and was dragged a few metres before the truck finally stopped," he said.

The victims have been identified as Shankar Bhai, Keshu Bhai, Narayan Bhai, Amrit Bhai and Bharat Bhai, all in their 30s, the SHO said.

According to Singh, all five belonged to Amja village in Gandhi Nagar.

The family members of the deceased have been informed and the bodies have been kept at the Community Health Centre in Balesar, he said.
