In a daring act, five undertrial prisoners today escaped from a police van near Gola road in Bihar's Muzaffarpur district, an official said.

These five prisoners, identified as Rajesh Yadav, Kailash Kumar, Govind Kumar, Abhijit Kumar and Mukesh Rai, pushed two police constables aside and jumped off a police van to make good their escape, the Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Ranjit Kumar Mishra said.

A case has been lodged at Town police station in connection with disappearance of five prisoners, he said.

The police van had 27 prisoners who were being taken to the central jail where all of them have been remanded in connection with criminal cases lodged against them in the district and adjoining areas, Mishra said.

Raids were being carried out to nab the five prisoners at large, the SSP said, adding that stringent action will be taken against the escort party for negligence on duty.
