Five-year-old elephant found dead

A five-year-old elephant was found dead today near a river embankment here, taking the total number of jumbos killed in the last fortnight to four, Forest officials said.

The male elephant was spotted by locals while engaged in community fighting of jumbos yesterday in the area. However, it was was found dead in the morning near Kaduasasan embankment along river Ramial under Kamakshyanagar forest range, Forest department official Basanta Kumar Mallick said.

An inquiry was on to ascertain the exact reason behind the incident, the official said adding the elephant was buried on the spot after post-mortem.

While two elephants including a 30-year-old tusker were killed on November 21 under Hindol forest range another tusker aged about 15 years died on November 28 under Kamakshyanagar forest range in the district.
