Flood Alert in Hogenakkal following heavy inflow in Cauvery

With surplus water from Kabini and Krishnaraja Sagar dams being released into Cauvery river, District authorities today issued a flood alert, warning people in low lying areas in Hogenakkal to move to safer places.

A team of officials comprising revenue, police, fire and rescue service, rural development, forest departments were deployed to monitor the flood situation in Hogenakkal, officials said, adding,District Collector, K Vivekanandan today ordered issue of flood alert.

Tourists were not allowed to go near the water considering the heavy inflow in the river, they said.

The continuous release of water into the river also increased the inflow into the Mettur Stanley reservoir considerably, officials said, adding, about a flow of 22,000 cusecs water per second was recorded in the river at the Hogenakkal area at 4-00 PM today.
 

Tourist activities and coracle operations have been banned in Hogenakkal in view of the flood situation, they said.
