Flood red alert sounded in 30 villages

Alarmed by the damage caused by floods in Uttarakhand, the district authorities today announced red alert in 30 villages situated near the banks of river Yamuna and Hindon.

Residents of 30 villages have been asked by the district authorities to be ready to be shifted to another location, sources said.

Arrangements have been made in primary school buildings of the district to provide temporary accommodation to the villagers, they said, adding animal shelter homes have also been identified.

District Magistrate Kumar Ravikant Singh today inspected the villages situated on the bank of both rivers and asked the irrigation department officials to take measures to prevent any damage to the embankments.
 

He also directed the district officers to take steps to ensure that the flood waters did not enter the villages.

Around 50,000 sand bags, and other materials near the banks so that any damage to embankment could be repaired immediately, sources said.
