Over 43,000 persons have been affected by the rising flood waters due to incessant rains in the past few days and back flow of the Brahmaputra river in Meghalaya's West Garo Hills district.
The administration has set up relief camps and warned that the flood could increase in the coming days in view of the back flow of Brahmaputra into its tributary, Jinjiram, district officials said.
"Incessant rains in the past few days and the back flow of Brahmaputra has affected 43,200 people in Selsella Community and Rural Development block," district Deputy Commissioner Pravin Bakshi said.
10,800 households in 86 villages were affected after which, 21 relief camps have been set up at different locations, he said.
Block Development Officer P R Sangma said at least 32 houses were reportedly damaged when back flow of the Brahmaputra caused the Jinjiram river to swell.
Sangma said all gram sevikas have been asked to assess the damage and a detailed report from Trikikilla block was awaited.
