: The 20th anniversary of 'Kargil Vijay Diwas' was celebrated here Friday.
Vice Admiral Atul Kumar Jain, Flag Officer Commanding-in-Chief, Eastern Naval Command, and others paid homage to the martyrs of the Kargil war and laid wreaths at the 'Victory at Sea' war memorial.
Vice Admiral VK Namballa (retired), president of Navy Foundation and Colonel PJ Lawrence (retd), Zilla Sainik Welfare Officer, and district Collector V Vinay Chand were also among those who paid tribute to the fallen heroes.
A Guard of Honour performed the 'Salami Shastra' and the Vice Admiral placed the floral wreath. While the bugler sounded the 'Last Post', a two-minute silence was observed.
With the guard reverting to the 'Salami Shastra' position, the bugler sounded 'Rouse' heralding the end of the ceremony. Salami Shastra is reversing of arms in honour of fallen soldiers).
The nation remembers the supreme sacrifices of martyrs of the Kargil war when India successfully recaptured the occupied few outposts on this day twenty years ago.

Ever since the victory in 'Operation Vijay, July 26 is celebrated the Kargil Vijay Diwas every year.
The Victory at Sea' war memorial is a fitting tribute to mark the supreme sacrifice of men who in the highest traditions of the Indian armed forces made the supreme sacrifice during the 1971 Indo-Pak war, said a press release from the navy.
