Flyer detained for trying to smuggle gold worth Rs 34 lakh

Customs officials today detained a passenger for allegedly trying to smuggle gold bars hidden in his rectum and seized 1.19 kg of the precious metal valued at over Rs 34 lakh at the Rajiv Gandhi International Airport here.

Based on specific inputs, officials from the Air Intelligence Unit intercepted the passenger, who arrived from Jeddah by an Air India flight, and seized 1192.5 gram (1.19 kg) of gold bars of foreign origin valued at Rs 34.46 lakh from him, sources in Customs Department told PTI.

"The passenger, who belongs to Mumbai, had concealed six gold bars in his rectum. He has been detained," they said adding further probe was on.
