In a unique project, the Vadodara Municipal Corporation (VMC) will construct a dome on a flyover here, with solar panels on its roof which will generate power and light up street lamps.

The project was inaugurated last evening by Gujarat Energy Minister Saurabh Patel and it will take shape on Akota-Dandia Bazaar flyover at a cost of Rs 25.5 crore.

The city civic body will construct the dome with sit-outs and railings on a stretch of the flyover which will have solar panels on its roofs.

"VMC is perhaps be the first civic body in the country to set up of a dome on a flyover to generate solar energy," Civic Commissioner H S Patel told PTI today.

During his speech, Saurabh said, "This project will act as a model for the country, as other states will also get motivated to make use of the solar energy this way."

The VMC has planned interesting designs on the exterior of the dome to add aesthetic value to it and the project is to be executed by an Ahmedabad-based company, the commissioner said.

The flyover connects the city area Dandiabazar to west of Vadodara Akota area.

"The length of the flyover is about 2 kms and the dome will be about 280 metres long. The solar panels, which will be put on its roof will generate a significant amount of power. The electricity generated will be used for streetlights," City Engineer P M Patel said.
