The number of trains delayed due to fog this winter was nearly twice that of the previous year.

As many as 12,700 trains were delayed due to reduced visibility this winter as compared to 6,700 trains last year, Minister of State for Railways Rajen Gohain said in the Rajya Sabha today.

"To avoid delay due to fog in winter and to enhance level of safety in automatic block signalling in fog-affected sections, modified automatic signalling has been introduced which restricts the number of trains between two stations," he said.

The Railways has deployed 6,739 GPS-based fog safety devices in trains that pass through fog-affected region.

The national carrier is in the process of procuring another 4,278 fog safety devices.

There was, however, a marginal drop in the number of trains cancelled due to fog this winter as compared to the previous year.

A total of 2,460 trains were cancelled between November 2016 and January 2017 as compared to 2,738 cancellations during the same period last year.
