An employee of the Assam government's Food and Civil Supply department was shot at by an unidentified gunman at his office in Dima Hasao district, police said Sunday.
According to police the gunman entered the Food and Civil Supply office at Haflong Government College Road here on Saturday and shot at Food Inspector Donald Dibragade, 37, from close range.
After firing two rounds at Dibragede, the assailant fled away, they said.
Dibragede received serious injuries and was immediately rushed to Haflong Civil Hospital for treatment, police said, adding that investigation into the incident was on.
The police arrested two persons for their involvement in the shooting of Dibragede.

Haflong DIG D Upadhaya said "Babu Chetri, the owner of a fair price shop in Haflong, had some dispute with Dibragede over some official work. This made him to conspire with Ibuhing Kuame in order to clear his path."
Addressing a press conference, the DIG said Kuame, who was booked earlier also for extortion on behalf of insurgent group, hired a shooter to kill Dibragade.
"We have arrested two conspirator. The shooter is absconding and our police team already initiated search operation to nab him," Upadhaya said.
Police has seized a 7.65 mm Italian made pistol and an empty cartridge from their possession, he added.
