A passenger was detained by the customs department here after 40,000 cigarettes of foreign brands worth around Rs 4 lakh were seized from him at theJaipur International Airport, a senior official said Tuesday.
Sumit Chagnani, a resident of Ajmer, had alighted from a flight from Thailand and was detained at the airport Monday night, he said.
Cigarettes of ESSE and Dunhill brands worth around Rs 4 lakh were seized from the accused, the official said.
He said a search was being conducted at the accused's residence and he was being interrogated further.
Travelling history has revealed that the accused was a frequent flyer, the official said, adding that a penalty of up to equal value of the seized consignment can be imposed.
