Foreign currency worth Rs 77 lakh seized from passenger

: A passenger bound for Singapore on a private airlines was today arrested for allegedly trying to smuggle Rs 77 lakh worth of foreign currency, the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence said here today.

Acting on a tip-off that Yousuf Shahul Hameed was carrying the currency in his baggage, DRI officials questioned him at the Chennai airport here, an official release said.

On searching him, DRI officials found that Hameed was carrying two bundles of foreign currency in his baggage and also had concealed two more bundles in his rectum.

DRI officials seized the currency which is valued at Rs 77 lakh in Indian currency.
 

The currency seized include Australian dollars, US Dollars, Canada Cent Dollars, Euros, Pounds, Francs, Singapore Dollars, Malaysian ringgits, Saudi and Qatar riyals, it said.

Since he did not possess any valid documents for the currency, it was immediately seized, the release said, adding, he was arrested under the Provisions of Customs Act, 1962.
