Foreign national held for bid to smuggle gold

According to the officials, the accused, whose name was not disclosed, landed at the Chhatrapati Shivaji International airport last night from Dubai on a Jet Airways flight and passed through the green channel.

As per the customs norms, only those passengers who have nothing to declare can pass through the green channel.

"The accused was intercepted on suspicion. While frisking, he was found with 5 kg gold smartly concealed in his coat he wore. The gold was in jewellery as well as in thin bar forms," the official told PTI.

The accused confessed that he tried to smuggle the gold and sell it here as there is a huge demand for the yellow metal.

 

Going by his passport details, the accused had visited the country in the past as well.

The accused claimed that he had come here to conduct recce and find out the loopholes in the security if any at the airport, the official said adding, "However, we suspect that he might have smuggled gold to India during his earlier visits HKS
