Foreign tourist arrivals jumped by over 4 per cent in 2013

Despite the slowdown in the global economy, the number of foreign tourist arrivals in the country registered an increase of about 4.1 per cent in 2013 as compared to the figures for 2012.

During the period January-December, 2013, the 'Incredible India' campaign attracted 68.48 lakh foreign tourists as against the 65.78 lakh foreigners who visited the country in 2012, according to Tourism Ministry data.

Foreign exchange earnings from tourism during 2013 were Rs 1,05,836 crore, representing a growth of 12 per cent over such inflows in 2012. Foreign exchange earnings had stood at Rs 94,487 crore in 2012.

Domestic tourism continues to be the main contributor to the sector, providing much-needed resilience. Domestic tourist visits for the year 2012 is estimated to be at 1,036 million, a growth of 19.9 per cent over 2011.
