Former AMU VC Saiyid Hamid dies

Noted educationist, social activist and former Vice-Chancellor of Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) Saiyid Hamid today passed away in New Delhi after a brief illness.

He was 94.

The AMU and its associated institutions will remain closed tomorrow as a mark of respect, a AMU spokesperson said, adding a condolence meeting will be held at AMU tomorrow afternoon.

Born at Faizabad in 1920 Hamid joined AMU in 1937 and obtained his Masters Degree in English from AMU in 1942.

He then joined the UP State Civil service and was promoted to the IAS.

He held charge as a Joint Secretary in several departments in the Central government including Home and Communications.
 

He was appointed V-C of AMU in 1980 and served in this capacity till 1985.
