Former Chairman of Carborundum Universal passes away

M V Murugappan, the former Chairman of abrasives manufacturer Carborundum Universal Ltd, a Murugappa Group company, passed away following "brief illness."

Murugappan, a senior most member of the Murugappa family, passed away yesterday at 10.45 pm.

He is survived by wife, two daughters and grand children.

Hailing from Pallathur in Ramanathapuram district, Murugappan obtained his degree in civil engineering from Birmingham University, England.

During the initial phase of his career, Murugappan served in the construction business and later became the Managing Director of Coromandel Engineering Company Ltd.

Subsequently, he took over as the Managing Director of Carborundum Universal Ltd in 1979, during which he made CUMI as a leading abrasives manufacturer. He retired from service in 2004 as the Chairman.
 

Murugappan has served in various capacities during his decades-old career including as the Chairman of Madras Chamber of Commerce and Industry.

He had also served the Madras Cricket Club as its President and was the head of India-Australia Joint Business Council.

He led a delegation to Australia for the Joint Business Council Meeting in 1992, the release said.
