A former chairperson of an urban local body in Ganjam district has been arrested for allegedly conspiring to eliminate a man involved in his business partner's killing, police said.

Accused Surya Polai, ex-chairperson of Aska Notified Area Council (NAC), was arrested in this connection yesterday, the police said.

Surya Polai had allegedly hired Babool Paswan of Jharkhand Prastuti Committee, a breakaway faction of Maoists, and Jitendra Nayak of Rourkela to kill Rabi Nayak, accused in Pratap Polai's killing on November 6, the police said.

Surya Polai was Pratap Poloi's business partner in the liquor trade.

Rabi Nayak and seven others are currently in jail.

Both Babool Paswan and Jitendra Nayak, also member of a Maoist splinter group, the People's Liberation Front of India (PLFI), were arrested near Bhanjanagar on Friday.

A plot was hatched to kill Rabi Nayak when he was to appear in the court at Aska on Friday, Bhanjanagar sub divisional police officer, Utkal Keshari Das, said.

Pratap (35), husband of Babita Polai, councillor of Aska NAC, was shot dead by two persons while going to Berhampur in a bus.

Surya was the chairperson of Aska NAC from August 2001 to July 2002.
