Mata, 86, was suffering from cancer.
An MLA from the local constituency number 4 here, Mata was minister in the Motilal Vora cabinet, then a Deputy Minister, and later chairman of Indore Development Authority during the Digvijay Singh government.
District Congress Committee President Pramod Tandon and senior Congress leader Kripa Shankar Shukla, a close friend of Mata's, condoled his death.
He strengthened the party base in Malwa region, they said.
He was also the chairman of Leprosy Seva Kendra in Nanada Nagar here.
