A former member of the Municipal Council was killed in Darwha town in Yavatmal district Sunday morning, police said.

Accused Sandeep Thote (35) allegedly hit Subhash Dudhe (50) with an iron rod and then crushed his head with a stone in Baripura area, police said.

Dudhe died on the spot, said Police Station Officer Rita Uikey.

Prakash Ddhe, the deceased's brother, is a member of Darwha Municipal Council. Subhash had won election to the council in the past as an independent backed by the BJP.

According to police, previous enmity seemed to be the reason for the killing.

"We have registered a case of murder against main accused Sandeep Thote and five members of his family," Uike said.

Yavatmal superintendent of police M Rajkumar rushed to the town following the killing.

Tension prevailed in Baripura area and a mob pelted Thote's house with stones.

The situation was now under control, the SP told PTI.
