Former militant arrested with arms and ammunition

Police today claimed to have arrested a former militant with arms and ammunition at Peeparangi area here.

Gurvinder Singh alias Guri is a resident of Gali No 3 of Friends colony here, Phagwara SP Jasbir Singh Rai told reporters.

"Guri was a former leader of the radical outfit International Youth Sikh Students Federation (IYSSF)," he said.

Rai said one 32 bore pistol, two live cartridges and one magazine were seized from him.

Guri was arrested at a police 'naka' at a link road in Peeparangi when he was travelling in a black-coloured SUV, he said.

A case was registered against him under various sections of the Arms Act the officer said, adding the vehicle was also impounded.
 

Rai said Guri had served seven years in Nabha jail in 2007 after an explosive substance was recovered from him.

He said it was being investigated as to whether Guri was currently involved in any militant activities or was a member of any terrorist module.
