Former Madhya Pradesh minister and senior Congress leader Dr Nirmal Hirawat died of a heart attack at his residence in Katangi town in the district, family sources said.
He was 74.
He is survived by his wife, who is also a doctor, a son and two daughters.
According to the family sources, Hirawat had collapsed in his house three-four days back and died of a heart attack during treatment early today.
The Congress leader, who was well-known as a doctor among the local residents, was instrumental in getting the status of a tehsil for Katangi.
He was a member of former Chief Minister Shyama Charan Shukla's cabinet.
Talking to reporters after paying tributes to Hirawat at his residence, Madhya Pradesh Agriculture Minister Gauri Shankar Bisen said his last rites will be performed tomorrow with full state honours.
